I am currently building my own computer from scratch and I have all the components except for the operating system. I want to install Windows Vista Home Premium, but every site I go to is selling Windows Vista Home Premium Upgrade. When I see the word upgrade it makes me think it wont install on my new PC that currently has no operating system. My question is, do I need to buy a special version of Windows Vista, or do I need to buy a previous windows operating system and then buy VIsta, or can I just buy Windows Vista Home Premium upgrade and have it work on my self built PC?

Boot with the Upgrade DVD version of Vista. Click ‘Install Now’. When prompted for a Product Key, do not enter it yet. This is the most important step; leave the fields blank, and click ‘Next’ to move to the next screen. On the new screen, select the version of Vista you bought. Install as normal (30 Day Trial). When finished, restart the DVD-based setup and install the software again, this time as a legitimate, full version. This will perform an ‘in-place’ upgrade. It will ask for the Product Key once more, and now you should enter it. The upgrade, sans Windows XP or 2000, is complete.

But do it quick before they fix it.

The upgrade is for a computer that already has Windows. I must say, having bought Vista, I would recommend waiting till they have ironed out the issues. You can get Fedora 6 Linux for only the cost of ordering the DVD or CDs. I would use that till Vista has matured. You can also have both Linux and Windows on your system. Linux is a much better OS, and it is free. Do not buy an upgrade unless you already have Windows XP.

Vista Upgrades are for "licensed" users of XP. Why? They paid for the licensing of $150 (at least). Check larger retailers for full blown version of Vista or Microsoft.com.

Then again, why would you want to?

Here.
