I am working on an old system that is currently running windows 95. I have a full version copy of Windows 98. Because this is a full version and not an upgrade version of 98 the computer won't let me install over 95. How do I fix it so I can intall a clean full copy version of windows 98. Will I have to uninstall 95? is that possible? Would a format of the hard drive alow me to install the full version of 98? Help!

First, I suggest you copy/backup any files you want onto flashdrives or an external hard drive.

Then, I would format the hard drive and install Win98.

However, this is if you have a legitimate copy of the Win98 CD.

When Windows installs, it takes the product key of the CD, mixes it with information of the computer on which you are installing it, and comes up with a unique ID. This is why you cannot install it on a second computer or even the original if you have made major changes and Windows thinks you have created a whole new computer.

A format of the hard drive would allow you to install 98. It will also remove any files currently on the PC, so if you have an documents (music, letters, pictures, etc) you want, be sure to back them up first.

Microsoft doesn't support Windows98 either. It's not worth it to squeeze blood out of a rock - just get a new PC.
