Yes. My son has XP at school and I have Vista. He sent me a paper to proofread and I could open it. I sent it back and he got it as well.

MS Word works the same on any version of Windows (95,98, ME, NT, 2000, XP or Vista). If both PCs have Word installed, you can open documents on either computer. You might run into problems if the version of WORD is different on the two PCs. But the version of Windows should make no difference.

Windows XP and Windows Vista are operating systems not application software. You're referring to Microsoft Word. Microsoft Word 2007 files have a new format (.docx), you can't open them in older versions of Word. But Word 2007 can open .doc files from earlier versions.

The short answer is "yes."
however, if they have Word 2007 on the new machine, then they must make sure to save their document as a .doc, as opposed to a multitude of other formats you are allowed to save files as in Office 2007. If it happens to be Office 2003 you're dealing with, the operating system has not interference with that.
