I prefer Symantec Antivirus Corporate. It's got the same engine and definitions as Norton, but is geared towards use in the office. It is much less CPU intensive and doesn't hassle the user with a bunch of questions all the time. It also protects against Spyware/adware fairly well.
It's the only proactive tool that I use.

I can give you few links that deal with anti spy wares and anti virus. I think you have to select a standard anti spy ware. I have come across a website that gives a brief study on spywares and their removal. It is very useful. Please visit
http://www.jskproducts.co.uk/spyware.htm .Here they give details of free as well as paid anti spy ware programs.
You may also try to select and install a suitable anti virus from the following link to protect the Pc against

The best solution is likely to be subjective for most. I'm a big fan of hardware based solutions like Fortinet - they add a buffer between your computer and the threat, and don't slow the computer down as much as software based solutions. If you must use a software solution, I like eTrust AntiVirus (doesn't seem to slow the computer down as much as Norton or mcAfee). and SpyBot. I maintain the latest versions of IE and Firefox, using Firefox for normal everyday browsing.
