and what does it have to do with installing linux??

A CD burner is basically just a CD-ROM drive that's also capable of writing (CD-R or CD-RW) data to a disk, instead of just reading it.

As for what it has to do with installing Linux, well.......... if memory serves me correctly from back when I could be bothered to read about these things in detail, LINUX is supplied as what is know as an "ISO Image file", which can be explained in better detail on this Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_image

It is a CD drive that is able to write to a CD. If you download an ISO image of Linux, you have to burn it to a CD using a CD Burner.
