Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free.

Paid for, the best one is ZONEALARM Internet Security Suite from http://www.zonelabs.com - came top in a test of Computer security software in this month's edition of WHICH? Magazine (a publication of the British Consumer's association), shortly followed by CA Internet Security suite by Computer Associates - http://shop.ca.com
For free, a toss-up between
Avira Anti-VIR PersonalEdition Classic
http://www.free-av.com
&
AVG Free Edition, from
http://free.grisoft.com
However with those you need to get seperate Anti-Spyware + Firewall protection, such as
SPYBOT: Search & Destroy from http://www.safer-networking.org + ZoneAlarm Free Firewall from http://www.zonelabs.com (supposed to be stronger than the one that comes built into Windows XP + Vista).

I use CA (Computer Associates) Anti-Virus. It is the best AV. I have used Nortons,Panda,McAfie, all had problems I didn't like, most were resource hogs and would slow down my PC. CA's anti-virus uses very little and runs flawlessly in windows 98se,ME, and all 32bit XP systems. check it out at tigerdirect.com.
PS. I read that Microsoft uses this same AV in their systems.

I have Norton Internet Security 2006, I think it's the best you can get for you're money; mine is just $49.99 I saved 20% on it by downloaded fron Yahoo: it's got anti-virus, personal fire wall ...etc. Plus I can set it to scan my e-mail coming in or going out.

I have been using Trend Micro PC-Cillin since 1998 and have been very pleased with it, I almost never get a virus and if I do, it is taken care of very quickly.
Also, if you want a free antivirus program, I highly recommend AVG.
