I just got a retainer about 10 min. ago from the dentist. It's one of those ones you have to wear ALL THE TIME (except when you're eating). I practically burst into tears when I saw my teeth with it on. IT IS HORRID!!!! What do i do? I've already tried asking my dentist if there are any that are less noticeable. HELP! I'm miserable!!!!!

To start with stop stressing over it. You won't have to wear it 24/7 for ever. In a short while you'll only have to wear it at night, so relax.

If you really hate it and your parents are willing to pay extra you could have a fixed retainer placed. This is a wire that is attached to the back of your anterior teeth (canine to canine upper and lower) and stays there permanently. It works well and allows no movement of the teeth but causes problems with flossing due to having to thread the floss through the embrasure area (the little V shaped tissue in between each tooth) and some patients have trouble with that. And flossing is a definite must with this retainer!

Talk to your dentist and your parents about changing to a fixed retainer if you think it will work better for you. It takes a little getting used to as well though. So keep that in mind before you start jumping up and down. I just hate that your upset about the retainer when you should be ecstatic about your teeth right now! So get happy and talk to your parents and your dentist about changing retainers to make you happy. One quick point that you could use as leverage is "there is a reduced chance of teeth shifting or moving with the fixed retainer."Good luck!
