I need a new computer. What brand should I get? Where should I purchase it and what specs should I look for? For both a laptop and computer?

Mysterious, I'm sorry but I don't agree with ANY of the advice other members have given you.

Of course you know enough to buy an established brand of computers, like ACER,COMPAC, NEC but the most important thing is to buy from a LOCAL DEALER.

The simple reason is that when trouble occurs you can go back to him for SOLUTION. If, on the other hand you buy from a distance you will have to send your PC back and forth, even if the repair is FREE it will cost you a fortune, perhaps $50 or more just for an estimate.

However, if you buy DEL you can buy an extrended warranty where they will come to your house and fix your computer but you will be paying $300 for a year or two of this sort of warranty.

My advice is buy an ACER with an AMD chip (better results than Intel every time, so say the experts).

Ask the dealler what his "support policy is". Here is an example:

I buy only from local dealers. Recently my PC began sounding like a threshing machine. I pulled out the cords, put the PC under my arm and took it downtown. The dealer said " It needs a new fan. It will take me an hour. I waited the hour and paid him $28".

My PC works great and I didn't have to send it to the factory etc.

Final tip : READ the ADS...ASK your friends. BECOME informed. Look at the ratings in Consumer mags. DO YOUR HOMEWORK.. That's what brings success.

Desktops? All name brands pretty much suck after you have a taste of quailty parts. Check with Microsoft and see if they have a list of OEM dealers in your area. Get it REALLY custom built so nothing is wated and you get a good PC and not a corporate PC from Dell.

With that being said, check techbargains.com for laptop deals (and desktops) and you will be sure to get a better deal. Let them do the work.

Don't forget an Apple computer as an option. It's more expensive but you don't have to worry about Spyware and Viruses that much. Check out you local Apple store, usually in a mall.

I would check out hp's website: www.hp.com. You can custom build your computer through them. Trust me, I've done it myself.
Here are some specs to consider:

Desktop
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz
RAM: 1 GB
Hard disk: 200 GB
CD/DVD burner
256 MB video card
19" flat panel monitor

Laptop
Processor: AMD Turion x2 2.0 GHz
RAM: 1 GB
Hard disk: 100 GB
CD/DVD burner
256 MB video card
15.4" widescreen
