When being away from the computer for a long period of time, which is better?

Leaving it on or shutting it down?

Depends on what a "long time" is... Days or more it's better to turn it off. If an hour or two, set your power settings to power-save mode and leave it on. If more than a couple of hours, just shut it down - the concern about power surge failure isn't as bad as it was many years ago.

It depends. I woulds say if it's a desktop, then just let it run. If it's a laptop, then I would say shut it down.
