I have an hp pavilion dv8000 laptop and it came with norton but I keep getting this message stating you are not protected against new threats. I try to click on "protect me now" and it says my subscription has expired and I have to renew it and theres a charge for that. What should I do? Is there anything better than Norton that will have me protected against viruses, spam, spyware etc...? Please help Thanks

AVG and ClamWin are both great free (ClamWin is even open source) anti-virus applications.

You'll also need a Firewall (even if you have the XP Firewall enabled). I'd recommend ZoneAlarm Personal Firewall.

However, an antivirus and firewall aren't the only tools necessary to keep your computer secure. You also need multiple anti-spyware applications and a secure browser.

For anti-spyware (on Windows XP), I recommend SpywareBlaster, Spybot - Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware SE Personal and Windows Defender. If you're running a version of Windows earlier than XP, you'll need to substitute SpywareGuard for Windows Defender. It may seem like a lot, but what one misses, the others will find.

Last but not least, the most secure (and easy to use, and functional…) browser is Mozilla Firefox. Don't forget to click the link to Firefox Add-ons which appears the first time you start Firefox, as the Extensions (Mozilla's name for a certain type of plug-in) hosted there can do anything from block ads (AdBlock Plus) to efficiently read web feeds (Wizz RSS).

I would stick with Norton. There is a small fee that you have to pay to renew your service, but it is worth it. I have Norton and I have never had a virus on my computer. One of the cool things about Norton is that every time you boot up, the software quickly scans your computer to see if there are any harmfull files. If it finds something, it immediatly alerts you and asks you what you want it to do. Norton will also scan files you download as well as webpages you visit to totally protect you from viruses and spyware, ect.

I have to agree with the first person who answered... I used to use McAfee and switched to Avast and found it a lot better.

Okay so this will seem like a shameless self plug here but.... If you go to the website my husband and I have and click on our Tools link you'll find a list of a bunch of programs, some antivirus, spyware stuff and some other things that we use for our site/personal use that are free: Avast is listed there as well and all our items listed go direct to links to find out more info/download. http://4einc.info You may find other things there that may interest you and not just the antivirus.

Hope this helped.

to be protected you actually have to buy it! when u first buy a computer an anti-virus is installed but after some time it expires and u have to updated (every year). Your ISP may offer some type of anti-virus system. You can also download a program at:

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

i have not used it myself so i don't know if it is actually free.

You can search for and download free antivirus programs, such as AVG, from www.download.com. You might want to check with your ISP first though. Many (such as Comcast) now offer antivirus programs for free to their customers.
