I just want to be able to run MS Word, Firefox, and the Sims 2. Seriously, that's all.

Definitely the Toshiba...
The Toshiba Satellite is basically THE strongest laptop out there and can handle any program and/or combination of programs on today's market. The Satellite is also a very dependable model of Toshiba, so don't listen to Mr. Ed Bassman because he just has t he wrong idea about toshiba.

I'll never buy another Toshiba again, nor recommend it. I got a big-time lemon in an M35X that had to be serviced 7 times (4 times for power issues, one fried motherboard and two bad LCD screens) over 2 1/2 years. So I'd go for the Pavillion.

Depends a bit on what you plan to do with the laptop. I'd prefer the Toshiba, but would try to get a larger hard drive.

Get a Macbook or Macbook Pro.

They can run all the software the others run, plus Mac OS X and all of its software. If you stay in OS X, you'll be more secure, so you can do things like online banking with less chance of having your identity stolen.
