Yes, and no.
#1 there's an acid in most soft drinks that can decalcify your teeth.
Braces can cause small cracks in the enamel of your teeth.
If that acid gets past the enamel, the tooth will start to decay. the sugar in the sodas will accelerate bacteria growth. Essentially you could be creating a way for your teeth to rot from the inside out. They can look fine and essentially be sponges with enamel shells.
Just say no to sodas. ESPECIALLY sodas that contain any form of sugar. (sucrose, fructose, corn syrup... doesn't matter)

The problem is not so much the staining but the amount of sugar and the amount of damage that sugar will do to your teeth.Juices are high in sugar too. Drink lots of unflavoured milk and water. Bottled water doesn't have fluoride and the incidence of decay is increasing because more people are drinking bottled and filtered water (and eating highly processed sugary foods). Drink sugary drinks in moderation, drink with a straw (it has less contact with the teeth), rinse with water afterwards and above all NEVER go to bed without brushing your teeth properly as saliva production slows right down when you are sleeping and the bacteria sits on your teeth all night breaking down into acid and causing decay and gum desease. This also happens when you're dehydrated which is why sports drinks are bad for your teeth.

It's the sugar AND the phosporic acid in soda pop that will wreak havoc on your braces.
Diet Sprite would be OK, but only every so often---it still has the phosporus and that will ruin your teeth underneath the braces and create those horrible marks.
I drank water, fizzy water and that's about it. Sorry.

Are you sure staining is the reason he said no soda? Maybe its concern over soda collecting in crevices and the resulting decay he is worried about. I don't think sprite in itself stains but maybe the citric acid present in most soda reacts with braces?

I've never heard of not being able to have soda with braces on. I have braces and drink soda and my teeth aren't stained at all. Just make sure you brush well!

I got my braces ten months ago and just got them off. I drank Sprite pretty much everyday and didn't get stains. They cleaned my teeth as well. If you do drink it, brush your teeth well after.
