Yes, that would be ILLEGAL. There's a reason Microsoft wants to sell these, and I doubt they would be on your side if you got it for free. I concur with the person who supports Ubuntu (free, a Linux system)- a great operating system compatible with most everything. If you want to run windows programs on Ubuntu, get WinE, the windows emulator. If you like games, Linux has awesome games: World of Freecraft and SuperTux. If you're responsible and want to work, Linux has the OpenOffice suite, the equivalent of Microsoft Office but with more features.

You can download ilegal .iso files from the file share programs like bearshare, kazaa, morpheus, lime wire, but they are all illegal copies. also alot don;t contain the serial or product key and might be hard to locate those. it would be better to purchase a copy. if you laptop is still under some sort of warranty you may be able to contact them.
even if they don;t you still may be able to get a 'restore' cd for your laptop model that will restore your windows install but it;s not a manual install of XP it;s more if just a pc image...it'll make it like the laptop was in the store...

Borrow one and use your existing licence key.
Failing that, if you still have your old hard drive, the other option is to clone it to the new one.
It's trickier with laptop hard drives, because you'd need an adaptor or two, so you can plug both drives into a desktop PC via the ATA cable (about £1.50 on ebay)
xxclone is freeware which will do the job. http://www.xxclone.com/idwnload.htm

If you have a 64 Bit processor you could get a evalution copy from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/facts/trial.mspx well downloading Windows 32 bit not officially possible. You could try many flavours of Linux like Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/download) or Fedora (http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Distribution/Download) should help.

It is not illegal to install a pirated copy of xp if your system came with xp installed. You are licensed to have a copy install on your system regarless of where you get it. That is why you have that little sticker on that side or bottom showing what came installed on the system this is your legal license.
