I'd like to install Vista but keep XP for the programs that will not work with Vista currently. I don't know how reliable Vista will be for me either, so I don't want to get rid of XP in case Vista doesn't work out for me.

Yes, you can. You can install Vista and initiate a dual boot; the only program I know that can help you do that is Partition Magic. When the computer first loads, it'll as you which OS you want to initiate.
