If you have the latest Anti Virus program install from Symantec or McAffe, this may be the cause. BUT DON'T UNINSTALL THESE PROGRAMS! I'm just letting you know that this maybe the cause, but you can work around it...
1) Scan your PC with an anti virus program;
2) Buy more RAM for your PC (optional since this will cost $);
3) Run both Ad-Aware and Spybot - Search & Destroy (both free);
4) Defragment your hard drive(s) (as mentioned above);
5) Clear your internet browsers cache and temp files;
6) Uninstall any programs that you may not use anymore or enough.
7) Activate Windows Firewall or install a third party firewall...
The list goes on, but these are the top things I do when working on customers computer... Good luck

Have you Defrag, Check Error, and are you sure that your computer is free of spywares?
To Defragment and Check Error, go to My Computer> right click on C: > Properties > Tools. Those two options take about one to a couple hours to do depending on the size of your harddrive.
If your computer still lags make sure you don't have a lot of junk running in the background as your windows is running. Start > Run > Msconfig > Startup. Check and Uncheck all those things you want or don't want to load at startup. Hope that helps.
