If you can assemble one yourself that's what you should do. You will get what you want in your computer and not what they offer. You can build a very good computer for a reasonable price if you do a little shopping for the best price.

Building your own PC is always better.
You can be specific about what you want. For example, you may want a flat panel monitor- but there are a great many brands to choose from. A branded pc will only give you their brand which may not be as good as another company or may cost more, etc.
No matter which way you go, the costs end up being about the same.
The added benefit of building your own computer is that you can upgrade your PC; with the components you want as they are needed. A branded PC will become obsolete and you are buying a whole new PC.
I have a home built PC, and on average I spend about $100 - $300 a year to keep it a high-end system for video games and programming. If you consider, that in 5 years you’re going to spend about $2000 to buy a new PC and I spend less than $1500 in upgrades I’m saving money and getting better parts.
Keep in mind, some things you may not have to upgrade if you can afford the upfront cost. Such as maxing out the amount of RAM your motherboard can handle. Getting excellent quality monitors. I’ve had the same CRT for over 8 years – and it’s still great.
Of course, now I want dual flat-panel monitors and that means I’ll probably spend a lot of money towards that in a couple years; but not again for another 9-10 years.
An awesome top of the line video card may cost $500-$600, and a medium maybe $300 but the top line will last in your system twice as long. Research I’ve done indicates that video cards have multiple chip sets – the cheaper the chipset the shorter it’ll last, but the cost is good for Brand names who boast they have a high end card when in reality it’s a cheaper chipset. These cheaper chipsets are available to you as well, so it’s very important to do your research if you are going to build your own pc.
Good luck, and if you have any questions feel free to email me: irishtek@yahoo.com

Both Assembles as well as Branded PCs have pros and cons.
Assembled PC - Pros:
- Costs less when compared to Branded ones.
- Freedom to choose your own configuration.
- Can be easily upgraded – via PCI slots and ports.
- You have the option of choosing the OS.
- This option works best if you have good knowledge of h/w and s/w and can repair it if needed.
- Alternatively you can go for an Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) for a nominal fee.
- Major components like monitor, hard disk, and optical drive usually have long warranty period (~5 years for Samsung brand) so you need not worry and you can have them replaced/repaired n number of times during this period, if needed.
Assembled PC - Cons:
- Service-after-sales/Repair: Free for 1 year (if you are getting it assembled by someone)
- Service-after-sales/Repair – may not be reliable
Branded PC - Pros:
- Service-after-sales/Repair – reliable
- Standard configuration – you can choose as per your intended use.
Branded PC - Cons:
- Costs more when compared to Assembled ones.
- Configuration - Company specifications.
- Upgrade is restricted to RAM and has fewer PCI slots for expansion.
- You have to pay extra for the OS.
- Warranty period/Service-After-Sales/Repair - company specific policies.
Branded - Compaq, HP
For information on configuration of Assembled PC, you can visit the h/w vendors in your city. They usually give the latest configuration available in the market and your budget. You can even buy individual components from different vendors after bargain and comparing price. It would really help if someone who has knowledge of computer h/w accompanies you. Let me know of you require further assistance.
The bottom line is you can get a better configuration with an assembled PC in the same budget that you spend buying a branded PC with lower configuration.

If you go for a branded PC you will have good warranty services and all the components are well synchronized and some companies also provide supporting software like DELL, IBM. And its tested in to International standards and all this come at cost slightly higher than the assembled one. In DELL you will can enjoy at home service.

Don't know where you are based but if you are based in UK I suggest asssembled to your configuration is better as long as it comes under a guarentee of sorts.
If it stops working you can't go to manufacturer.......but you can go back to retailer.

The thing is about assembled ones is usually they are easier to update should you so wish to learn how to.
Good luck.

Its better to build your self the pc because you could choose the hardwares you want and it would be cheaper too.By building yourself, its better because you could be able to select the parts you need. For pc usage, its better to choose amd athlon or amd athlon x2 because its cheaper and very stable plus very fast too compared to pentium d.But if you are willing to spend a lot,its better to choose core 2 duo because its very fast then amd x2.with amd x2 you can do multitasking and good for gaming too.Core 2 duo is better for everything. You can go to www.newegg.com and www.techspot.com to get more information on the list of hardwares.
