I have to write an essay for this college...I really really want to get accepted, so I need help! Here is what I am supposed to write about in the essay:

"..write a brief essay on what you hope to accomplish in (career), and how (name of college) will help you achieve your goals."

So I've started writing, but I have a question. I was wondering if it would be ok to include in the essay what made me decide to pursue this career.. is it ok to include this brief background, or not, since the topic does not mention anything about that? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

definitely include background/context. The question is more of a springboard for you to take in the appropriate direction, and as long as you answer the part about your future goals and how the school can help you, if you take it to a deeper level or answer with more personality or detail than they ask for, that can only help. Of course, do stay on topic -- your development and career. After reading your essay, the admissions officers should believe they have a good grasp of your motivations, background, and what you hope to contribute. (i used to work in admissions)

The whole point of the essay is to get to know the personal you. This is the one and only chance to distinguish you as a person from a couple of numbers.

So add whatever you feel is appropriate to define who you are. Who are you? What are your passions and beliefs? What drives you to want to expend the money and energy to fulfill your goal? Why that college, why are you so passionate about THIS particular college.

The thing is, these guys will immediately tell who is blowing off the essay, who is writing what they thing the committee wants to hear, and who is really passionate about their future and what the college has to offer.

So yes, include the information. Include why the college is the ideal choice for you (location, prestige, environment, learning structure, etc.). And really let the essay speak from the heart, because they will recognize that.

And for God's sake spell check and have someone else read it over.

Yes do include it. It will give insight into you which will make you more of a person instead of just an essay. Just make sure the majority of the essay focuses on the question asked. Make sure you are passionate about what you are talking about!
