Don't do it unless you have the CD key. It will ask you during the installation and if you don't have it you might as well buy another copy of XP (with a proper key, and each key is specific to the CD). Don't download on Bit Torrent. Why? You don't know what's out there.

Most mass-production manufacturers provide image cd's/dvd's that don't require you to put in the cd-key in re-installation. (I'm assuming you are using the cd's/dvd's included with the machine.) However, the Windows cd-key should be provided if you need it. In most cases it is printed on a sticker that is usually attached to the top or right side of your machine (and is sort of a green and blue color). Hope that helps!

*Edit-- Oh, and the cd's/dvd's I mentioned are bound to the machine, meaning they won't work on any other machine.

You'll need the CD key to activate windows I believe. Otherwise, can't be done. Even if you were to get your hands on a borrowed CD, then you have to worry about authenticity. In order to activate windows these days, you have to call out and give them your CD key.

Time to switch to a MAC baby...

It would be better if you re-formatted the machine using Linspire, the easy to use Linux that looks like Windows and runs your Windows programs as well.
