There are several way's this can happen but pay pal will back it up if you tell them and show them proof. One thing that can happen is getting a bot and a virus with a key logger , it can actually turn your computer on and dial up the Internet and if you have dail up they can use your dial up to do it with especially if you have the password saved. This is only one way there are others, but I won't go into it on the net. Someone else could use it to do it onto someone else, but like I said contact Pay pal they will help but it takes time. NEVER Give your checking account always use a credit card, that give you time to fix it but if it's your checking they can wipe you out before you even get notice and if your banks cover over drafts, you could really get in trouble fast. always use a credit card that has a low amount like 300.00 bucks, and make sure it has protection against fraud, NEVER USE YOUR CHECKING ACCOUNT EVER!!!

Many possible ways.... apart from someone close to you actually stealing the info it could have happened due to spyware on your PC.

Now, most likely by a "bot" which automatically & periodically checks status of your account & uses it whenever possible.

Prevention ? Well, personally I refuse to do any financial transactions on the Internet ... despite the fact that I have very advanced multi tiered sucurity on my network .... it's not worth the risk.
If necessary I will wire funds to a reseller or service provider ... but no paypal & defenitely no credit card or bank info.
The cons just outweigh the pros.

Do not use PayPal.
PayPal has been subject to numerous lawsuits.
PayPal will not delete the charges like a credit card company does when you simply state the charges are fraudulent.

Did you change your username and passwords?
Are you the only one who knows the passwords?
Are passwords stored on your computer encrypted?
Is your computer free of Malware; have you got a Firewall?
Are you responding to bogus pay pal emails (Phishing).
Do you shred your personal information.

Many credit card companies including PayPal can give you a disposable credit card number only good for one transaction.
