What does this error message mean on startup (before all my programs launched)?

Windows cannot find 'C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\Scanner\PPUPDS~1.EXE'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

Thanks to anyone who can give some clarity!!!

I was not searching for anything. I was just turning the computer on!

That's leftover from some spyware that was removed. The code line is telling Windows to find/run that file, but the file was deleted with the sypware. I'm not sure how to delete it, but go here, and repost this question and these guys will help you out. I had this exact same problem and they fixed it really fast.

The file seems to be related to the scanners driver utility. By that I mean the UI that enables the scanner to be accessed from different software applications. Depending on whether or not you actually use the UI, it may seem that your scaner is working perfectly fine when you perform a scan. Some programs are capable of controlling a scanner directly rather than through its UI. Therefore, you will not notice any problems. The UI is supplied through the scanners driver and is designed to enable common scanning features no matter what program is accessing your scanner. It usually provides you with the ability to choose the resolution, color management, orientation and scanning area as well as provide a preview of you scan.

This is only a guess as I do not use the same hardware you do, just judging by the location of the file. It's in a location designed to be available to all your Windows user accounts.

When windows start up it start a list of programs automatically. You probably deleted some file that windows try to run. That happens when Windows try to run a program that no longer exist on your hard drive

Click on START menu, go to Run...
type in 'MSCONFIG'
When the System Configuration Utility window pop up. Go to the Startup tab. Uncheck the file thats causing the problem. Click OK

this is caused by the files which u used by installing them and removed or have been deleted unwantedly so better u give the full extension of file it may be of a scanner or of a anti virus scanner so u better know if u had plugged a scanner if so just re install the drivers of that and if this is a case of anti virus then too reinstall the software if it is still not working then go into safe mode see the closest restore point and restore u r PC.

PestPatrol.

Make sure the Scanner and PestPatrol (under Program Files) folders are deleted.
Then, download CCleaner to remove registry entries.

Uncheck "Add CCleaner Yahoo! Toolbar" if you don't want it installed.
When CCleaner is opened, navigate to the Issues icon and select "Scan for Issues". Use "Fix selected issues" for repair. Be sure to make backups of your registry via the program.

Hopefully, that should solve your problem. If that doesn't work, you'll have to use MSConfig.

Did you uninstall a virus scanner recently?
