I have some ideas for inventions that I would like to try and have patented but my only problem is that I have no idea how to go about doing this. I have tried searching websites but it seems some websites are trying to rip people off by stealing their ideas. I just want to do this the right way with out being screwed over. If anyone out there has an answer I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you all so much!!!!!!!!

It is not possible to protect ideas but rather the representation of that idea.

To protect an original invention OR a significant improvement to an existing product, a patent would be filed. Here's the USPTO's definition: http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/doc/general/index.html#patent

NOLO is a great, free informational site. Also, be sure to read what the USPTO (United States Patent & Trademark Office) has to say about patents.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

Getting a Patent:
* Patent It Yourself (11th Edition) by David Pressman
* Patents and How to Get One : A Practical Handbook by U.S. Department of Commerce
* How To Make Patent Drawings Yourself: A Patent It Yourself Companion by Jack Lo
* The Inventor's Notebook: A Patent It Yourself Companion by Fred E. Grissom

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

You need to do some research to see if your idea is patentable. My experience is that you should ask your friends to recommend a patent/IP attorney to run an applicable patent search on your invention. An attorney can do this for less than $500 - $1,000. Then follow the advise that you receive. Which could include: patent protection is not available, not necessary or of utmost importance. Do not go to the invention submission companies.

Determine if and what size the market is for your product.

Determine what the price your invention would sell for.

Determine if you can make, sell, deliver, service and profit at this price.

Good Luck

watching the complexity of your invention, you're able to hunt for the advice of a patent lawyer or a patent agent this is registered with the U. S. Patent and Tradmark place of work. many cases, patent purposes are rejected no longer by using fact the belief isn't patentable, yet by using fact the appliance become no longer submitted properly. the different element to evaluate is that in case you don't be conscious your application properly (besides to the kind application, you're able to offer an define and an precis of your invention), your invention won't be secure to the whole quantity to which you're entitled.
