need a switch that can switch from power source to a generator and back during power outages

Nothing that you build at home will meet any electrical code due to lack of testing and certification. Even if your final product was in every manner better than what came from an electrical supply house, the lack of the UL or CSA sticker will cause you grief in case of fire or other electrical damage.

The switch itself must have a mechanical interlock such that the generator input and main electrical supply input can not both be on at the same time. This would cause a back feed situation and is very dangerous. Some electrical panels have a retrofit kit available which will allow 'backfeeding' via a spare breaker which is interlocked to the main household breaker. Check these sites for more info.

It's called a "transfer switch", and they are widely available. Unless you are very comfortable working on electrical systems, it is a job for an electrician.

They make them pre-made.....(automatic transfer switch) around 600$.
