In the LA area most places don't take travelers check but you can always find places that take credit cards or atm cards with visa or master card logos, also you can get prepaid credit cards that will give you the same safety as travellers checks, this would be the best bet, because you can get several with small amounts.

Credit card - you get some protection then.
Don't carry large amounts of cash. Many companies, particularly motels etc are very suspicious of cash only.

I would advise using a Credit Card, but make sure you keep within the same limits as you would with your other choices.
