If you call me native of spanish, you would be stupid. I never speak in any language cause i'm shy and i've always been, I don't do anything social..and i'm a loner. I don't understand why White people who i meet in the street, (bus stop etc)If I don't respond with a long discussion or outgoing personality, they immediately assume I don't speak english and that i must speak spanish. They say something like( A is white person, B is me)
A: Hello do you have the time?
B: uh?
A: Tiempo hermano
So yu see, i say uh, because i don't hear. or i might respond quietly and in a shy manner.. and they immediately go to spanish

I guess this would depend on where you live. Here in Tampa, most are bilingual, and alot speak Spanish better than English. I don't think it's an insult, just an assumption, and if it bothers you, work on that English and that shyness! On the one hand, alot of people have bothered to learn decent Spanish when those who speak Spanish haven't bothered to learn decent English. And trying not to offend or make anyone feel silly, people try to accomodate Spanish speakers.
I took a tour of Spain for 3 weeks and then lived in Germany for 1 1/2 years, and when people noticed my accent and switched to English, I felt as though they were making me comfortable. If I didn't like that, I should have practiced the languages more.

If I met a white person with an Italian accent and they said, "uh?" after I asked a question, I would assume that they were native Italian speakers.
How many countries have you lived in or visited? I've been to and worked in several. Perhaps other than "uh?" you could say, "Excuse me?" or "What did you say?"...even one word, "Pardon?" They are not "long discussions."

i do no longer think of that so do no longer generalize. in fact, Spanish is an ecu language ergo white so all of us that thinks that conversing Spanish makes somebody non-white is truly incorrect. yet you're good many do think of that spanish by some ability makes them non-white and non-black yet a race onto their very own. i've got seen it. all of us with an common education knows that Latin individuals have ecu, NA, and African ancestry. some are white, some are black, some are mestizo, others indigenous, and a few mulatto. Even chinese language and jap are recent in international places like Peru or Uruguay.

Honey you are sooo right! I am white and I try to spread it around that not all brown skinned, shy people aren't necessarily Spanish speaking. Thank you for more proof. Guess what, when I lived in Dallas and spoke Spanish almost every day, sometimes my English had a Spanish accent and I am of German and Irish and Swedish decent!

You're making a racial generalization. And if you ever respond to a question with "uh?" you need to learn how to think before you speak.

I suppose it's because the odds are in their favor of being correct. People learn from previous experiences.
