Definitely get a Mac. I don't know much about the advertising industry and what you use your computer for, but I've had far less problems and headaches with my Mac than with Windows. It's far less prone to crashes, viruses, and spyware, and everything just seems to work properly. You can also use Office on a Mac if you need to, and can even run Windows on an Intel Mac if you have any Windows programs you need to run, so it's really the only computer you'll ever need.
Keep in mind, however, that many things on Mac OS X are different from Windows, so it may take some getting used to. Once done, however, I think you'll find OS X much easier to use. I'd recommend getting the book "Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual" by David Pogue; it's a great book to help you make the transition. Good luck!

You should probably go with a Mac. First, Macs have been the industry standard for years in advertising and publishing. Also, since you have peers in the field already, you will be able to work in a collaborative environment easily.
"User firendly" is a subjective term, and you may find that adjusting to the way a Mac works will take a couple of weeks, but they are very easy to get used to. You should have no problem.
Finally, if you get one of the new Intel based Powerbooks, then you have the option of also installing Windows if you really need it.

Historically I would have said get an Apple product. But today both PC and Mac perform the same, dont be fooled by the commercials. With the Mac you will have more mouse clicks, with the PC more keyboard strokes, the same but different. I would choose the PC that most of your peers are using. This is not because of performance but a matter of compatibility. Being in advertising you may be doing some graphic arts. Thus you may want to collaborate with others or share files. This will be easier to do if you have similar computers running similar software. Pricing wise, PC components are cheaper.

Mac's are much better since they pay of their amount of money you paid for. Many schools across the country still use their old imacs! They also probably upgraded it to Mac OSX. There is no defragmentation involved with the mac. You could even upgrade the OS when apple releases a new one, though you do not have to upgrade the computer. Though, i suggest investing in an reburfinished Macbook (pro) since they have the new Intel chips and are relatively cheaper. I've upgraded up to mac and learned it inside and out in a matter of 2 days. Plus there is a built in camera to do videos, pics, and webcaming.

no, just because of lack of knowledge on macs but you are doing the right thing in carefully researching this before investing because once you decide on something you want to have as few regrets as possible. Good luck.
