Could anyone help me with a quotable and reliable online source that shows me why English was chosen as the USA's official language? I seem to remember reading somewhere that a vote took place to choose English over French. If you have access to that, I would appreciate you letting me know where I can look it up.

Many thanks.

English is just the De facto language of The United States; it is not official. In fact, because English is not an official language New Mexico can have it's state Declaration in both Spanish and English. The reason SOME white people (We're not all like that) get mad at others speaking different languages here in the U.S. is because they are either ignorant of other languages, cultures, or people or don't understand that everyone has a free right to do as they please when it comes to language, beliefs, and lifestyles. America was founded by immigrants for immigrants, we are the land of the free and we as a country seem to be forgetting that.

The United States does not have an official language. Some cities have passed laws requiring English to be used in business but other than that, there is no FEDERAL LAW designating English as the official language.

I don't know anything about a vote or about any quotes or sources, but here's what I will say.

The area that is now the US was first colonized by the British or by British pligrims. They spoke english. Yes it is true other areas like Louisanna and Flordia were controled by other non-english speaking nations the 13 colonies that formed the US spoke english and when other territories joined the US, they too took on the language. Simply the founders spoke a language and anyone else who wanted to join them took it on too.

The USA has no "Official" language. While English is the most common, there is no law on the books stating that it is our offical language.
