"Sleep tight" refers to rope that was tied across the bed frame acting as a mattress support. Sleeping tight meant tightening the ropes keeping the mattress from sagging so that "bed bugs" couldn't crawl up.

Exactly what it means.
Beg bugs were really a nuisance a hundred years ago. They lived in the bedding it's self.
They had been mostly eradicated- so most people are not aware of them.
They are making a comeback, however.
I work for a on line Travel agency, and a customer who was complaining about a hotel sent in the pictures of their bed-bug bites.
It was horrible- they were covered head to toe in red swollen bumps.

When you rented a bed in days past, you literally rented the BED, not a room... and most likely you also got guests in the bed along with the rental. Bedbugs. And so the thing to say to one who was sleeping in the bed with you ( and it may or may NOT be someone you knew, it depended on how many beds there were available) was "sleep tight and don't let the bedbugs bite!"

When it started it was a literal warning about bed bugs. MItes and other insects that lived in the seldom changed bedding material used before the modern mattress was perfected.

Bed bugs, were a common element in poor, poverty stricken areas throughout the world. They thrive on dead skin, and sweat. They are usually only found in extreme filth or extreme poverty.
They were known to carry diseases that could cause someone with bad health to die. Thus it is a wish to not get sick due to bed bugs carrying disease.

well bed bugs are insects that live in bedding and only come out at night to live off your blood....this is true....they are not common nowadays...but this is a saying that mothers say to their children..as in 'night 'night --don't let the bedbugs bite'. I think mostly because it rhymes.
