Ionization energy is the amount of energy required to remove a valence electron from an atom. The first ionization number is to remove the first electron, the second ionization number is to remove a second electron, the third removes the third electron. The ionization energies increase to remove each electron because the negative and positive charges of the ion are becoming more unbalance as you remove more electrons. If all of the valence electrons are removed and you remove one more from a complete inner shell there will be a tremendous increase in the ionization energy required. The trend in ionization energy is that it decreases as you go down a group but increases as you go across a period.
