If you know someone that sells Tupperware, order a lettuce crisper. It's a bowl with a lid and a platform in the bottom that has a prong that inserts into the lettuce head. Naturally, you put the bowl in the fridge. It will keep lettuce crispy for 4 to 5 days.

I used to work in a diner, and we had the problem with the salads we made for the always going bad by evening, so we started making them each time they were ordered and got the lettuce to last sometimes up to a week but getting a large plastic bucket (you could probably use a large tupperware for at home) and filling it with water, then just submerge lettuce. We left it uncovered in fridge in the water, not just a little make it a lettuce bath tub. Hope this helps!

the best answer i can give you: don't buy the ready-made salads.
A. they are usually older than an actual lettuce head
B. often companies use preservatives which will keep the lettuce fresh for a long time--until you open the bag.
C. as with most vegetables, as soon as you cut into them, the nutrient loss is accelerated
D. it's usually cheaper to buy the parts yourself and make your own food.

Do you have a drawer in your fridge with an adjustable humidity. Turn that to the low humidity side. I usually wash it and put it in a plastic bowl with paper towels in the bottom and then put a cover on it. This makes my last a little while.

Get a salad spinner for the excess water. If it's too dry it will die. It needs some moisture. Just not so much that it rots.

I have found that wrapping my lettuce heads in a dry, keep in mind it must be dry when you first wrap the head, dishtowel. This absorbs the humidity and moisture temp. changes in fridges. Stay healthy! : )

to make it crispy soak it in water, water will carry out osmosis and the cell membrane of the lettuce will let water in and keep it fresh and crispy, thats what i learned in science class.
