It typically means the house was designed with 2 living quarters. There would be a seperate entrance into the house two seperate kitchens, and possibly baths. The floor plan would be open to all in the house, which is why it is not classified as a multi family since it not sealed off as seperate units with complete privacy.

I think that usually means that there are mother in-law quarters. That is where the basement or an addition to the house has been turned into a small apartment that a old, or sick mother used to live. I am pretty sure that is what it means. Don't quote me on it.
