We had the same problem, but we have mastiffs and a lab. It was so bad it looked like we had hair carpeting. We would have to vaccume repeatedly everyday.......UNTIL we started using a product called SHED-STOP (petsmart even carries it along with pet med mags). It worked really fast and solved the problem completly. One of our dogs had "hot spots" too and they went away and never came back! It replaces their essential oils and gives extra vitamins and minerals needed for their skin and coats. We saw drastic improvements in the first week but after 3 there was no more problem. It is just a liquid that is given or added to their food ( and ours loves it). A few tablespoons a day , and no more shedding! YEAH. (not real expensive either for the little you use each day and how long it lasts...not to mention the RESULTS).

Your Dane should not be an excessive shedder. Are you feeding a good quality food..one with no corn, wheat or soy?? If not I suggest you change to a better food..your dog will be healthier for it and the coat will be a lot better.
If you are feeding a good quality food with meat as the first 2 ingredients and without the cheap fillers, try adding a couple of teaspoons of olive oil or fish oil to your dogs food.
Don't bath often as this will make the problem worse by drying the skin and removing the natural oils.

Brush your dog daily to reduce the amount of shedding on you carpets, some dogs do shed more than others even of the same breed. I have had a very sheddy golden, and one that only shed twice a year, and one that had hardly any shedding at all.

short haired dogs like your Dane - tend to shed all year long... brush regularly and use one of those "glove" type things - also, make sure you are feeding a high quality dry dog food,,,,, Canidae, Timberwolf are some good choices

I just recommmend brushing her down once a week.
For a short hair dog, used one of those rubberized "washing" brushings. It's fits in the palm of the hand and has rubber spikes.
Kong makes one called the "Zoom Groom"
Your great dane will like the brushing too.

Get yourself a slicker brush. They work better than the KONG "Zoom Groom." I've owned both. Also, the slicker brush is what professional groomers use,and the brush that most show breeders use. You can find a slicker at mostly any pet supply store.
