I was born in 1962.
In the late 60's there were "mod" dressers - short skirts, go go boots, pale lipstick, teased hair with lots of height, heavy eyeliner and fake eyelashes. Here is a link to the "Laugh In" website that shows it pretty well.
http://www.timvp.com/laughin.html . The pretty blonde lady you see in a couple of the pictures with the big eyes is Goldie Hawn, she was beautiful then and still is now....
There were also hippies that were long unfixed, usually straight hair, gauze empire waisted tops, flowing skirts or jeans and no makeup for the girls, and just long scruffy hair and tshirts or big shirts for guys (think of the hippie scene in Forrest Gump)
There were also "preps" that were what we called "the preppy look" in the 80's. Girls wore nice button down shirts, penny loafers and slacks, men wore short hair and button down shirts similar to today.
Just like today, you chose whatever style appealed to you. For me, I have done the mod look before for a costume party- it's a great look and fun to put all that makeup on!
Women also wore girdles, pointy bras, hose that fastened to a garter belt (panty hose were not around then), altogether not very comfortable.
In case you are wondering, the early 60's was mostly a prep look for the guys, and dresses and nice shoes for the girls... hippie and mod stuff started in the late 60's.
Hope this helps.

Funny thing is that most people dressed pretty much the way they do now. Hippie dress, even on most college campii of the day, was a minority, despite the media and Hollywood's hazy recollections.
You want an idea, watch My Three Sons from that era.
I was born in 1960, so the hippie era happened when I was in grade school, but I still remember quite clearly.
If you want to see some wacky clothes, check out the mid-to-late 70s. Big collars, polyester, weird patterns, lots of corderoy.

Like they were on drugs. Oh! wait they were high. The fashion styles of the 1960's are precsicely why you shouldn't smoke pot, drop acid or LSD.
