Does anyone know how much housing benefit he is likely to get as they have still not sorted it 6 weeks laters and he is getting worried that he will owe a load of money

Again as others have stated depends on his income, should have got a pre tenancy determination from local council then would have had an idea how much they'd pay & if he had to top it up.

Do contact council though 6 wks is far too long to be waiting.

It does depend on how much income he has and to a degree his commitments. If he is on income support he should get the full amount or almost the full amount. I believe that the Council is required by law to deal with such claims within 14 days so it might be very worth while checking with him that he really has made the claim and if so what is holding it up. Have his landlord - for example - provided him with proof of the rent?

He will have to show he is renting an actual room and not living as a lodger. They may wish to inspect the premises. He should get about £45 pw if he's lucky.Chase them up ---they've been too long.
