Just a thing where somebody fills out a crossword puzzle, clicks on a button and it checks their puzzle.

Sure! You can do it easily with a table to format the grid and and a form with single character input fields.

A nice little routine in PHP would make this very well.

Yes, it can be done (it *is* done). You have to write a program that lives on the "server" and intercepts the keystrokes of the viewer's computer, compares them to the solution of the puzzle. You may write the program so that it either gripes as soon a wrong letter is typed or wait until the entire wrong word is typed, or whatever. 'sup to you, cuz you write the program that handles the puzzle.

I do a crossword every day on a (quite big) site. They use:

But as my only experience of it is from the user end, I can't say how easy/hard it is to install or manage
