That is tricky.
First if I am not on your IM list you will never know.
Second, if I am on your IM list, then you can make yourself invisible to everyone. Therefore, no one will know you are on line and you can see, from your IM list, who is on line.
Third, plant a bug in the room.
Fourth, put a key logger on the persons system. Then if you try to log on to their internet and you can not then you know they are on. Only one person can log on to a site with the ID and password.
Five. Bribe the user's younger sibling to let you know when they get on.

You can put them all on invisible and when u go online they will not be able to see when u come online. This works for sure in yahoo.
