I currently have a fiber-optic connection at home, but have had DSL in the past.

On my fiber-optic connection provided by UTOPIA, I can download information from a p2p at an average of 800kb/s, and can upload at just about the same speed. The speed generally is limited by OTHER users, which can be a bugger. If you are downloading from a central server, one might attain speeds in the realm of 2-3mb/s which means you can download a 120 minute movie in just about 30 minutes (... assuming you were you allow yourself to engage in such illegal activities)

The average update I download and install tells me that using a Dial-up modem will require 45 minutes. I take 30 seconds.
