People don't like to hear this but our personal preferences about which animals we love and hate are because of our psychology. It says a lot about us, and tells us nothing about the animal!
Some people don't feel strongly either way, some feel intense hatred or love.
There are people who act out that hatred. And there are also people who dress up their pets as little furry people.
Its the same reason why some people love a breed of dog and get very defensive to the point where they won't hear any critisism about the breed; even if valid and tactful.
You can learn a lot about yourself by looking honestly at your own reactions to other people, events and animals!
When people say that they prefer cats 'because they're independant', they are not telling us anything about cats; they are telling us something about themselves, about their preferences.

For me, I never disliked cats, just thought of myself as a dog person, that is until last year. Our dog died 2 years ago and we went to the shelter to find a new pet. Eventually, because we no longer have a fenced yard, decided having a dog would be difficult. My kids each wanted to try a cat and we fell for these two cats who had to be adopted together. At first, I was skeptical, not used to their behavior, but now I can't imagine not having these two adorable cats. They each have a distinct personality and they entertain us differently. Also, they do greet us when we come home and follow us around. I could go on an on, but I think everyone is different with different opinions and some like cats/some don't.

Pros:
Dogs are very active most of the time and no matter what breed of dog you have the result in protection they give you will always be an effort, as long as they love you of course. Dogs also seem to have more activities you can play with them.
Cats are laid back and good company to have when you lie in bed at night. (Yes, you can let a dog sleep in you're bed if you want, BUT it's not that great of an idea because you're telling the dog he is on the same level as you. Cats, I believe it's a different story.)Unlike dogs, cats don't NEED to be taken for a walk, sure, give them some fresh air once and awhile, but most cats are content with just lying on your bed all day. (Like mine.)

Cons:
Dogs can become messy and hard to train at some points. Because dogs take dominance more seriously (in my opinion), it is harder to control them.
Cats may seem to be "lazy" to some people and not as good protection as a dog can provide. I mean, I'm not putting down the two species, their different. Dogs were made for different purposes, as were cats.

I'm not sure if I answered you're question, but the pros and cons should help you understand the goods and bads of owning both animals. :) Hopefully. O_O

From own observation around me, humble suggestion... Cats lovers usually look more independant and although they can have friends they musn't be together all the time and don't always share the same ideas and feelings; So will you be with your cat. And Dogs lovers socialize in a different way, belonging with a group having much in common, hobbies or politics... So is your dog, always closely following you anywhere...
To sum up the pet you like may reflect the way you conceive your human relationships somehow.
I don't know, for fishes ...something to do with security and peace of mind ;) ?

Cats are awesome, they have that " Go to hell " attitude till they want food or attention. Their lazy, sleep all the time, but can be your best friend to. They love to play and crave attention at times.
Their independent, that's why I think alot of people don't like them. Some people like dogs because they are pack oriented and dependent on their owner, making the owner feel more wanted. Before I offend dog owners, I not only have a dog, I have a cat and several bearded dragons and iguana's. I feel needed to!

You can tell the difference in people. We have kittens to give away. One lady came in and she simply went over the top for the kittens. A husband and wife came in and inspected the kittens. He asked a heap of questions and wanted a kitten that did not scratch and expected it to come up to him straight away.Kittens are kittens. All kittens scratch. The kittens areall adorable. These people were so very fussy. I guess a cat will appeal or not appeal to people.

I adore cats, don't get me wrong I love all animals ...my preference is for a cat( well 3 actually!) for my way of life cats are easier( disabled)

Its all down to preference...I just think they are amazing creatures and fascinating to watch! Affectionate at times, independent when they want to be...amusing to watch ! I find most of all that a cat purring near to me when I am down is very relaxing and at times help me sleep. I wouldn't be without a cat in the home!( and no long walks on cold, wet rainy days)
And yep...they all 'welcome' me home everytime!

Concerning some of the answers, I'd suggest you all (those who do and those who don't like cats) get a Bengal.

They are more like dogs in their personality but still have the grace and cleanliness of a cat.

:)

Mine always greets me when I come home, she loves the water, we play fetch, hide & seek, and when I say "NO" she listens.

The people who say they don't like cats have never had a cat to love them.
