girl,
I also have a female cat that, as a kitten made a habit of covering her food with whatever was around...be it plastic grocery bags, newpaper, magazine, etc.
My solution was to eliminate all those things that she could use to break the habit.
It worked!

My cats do this when something smells bad, if I leave out a plate of my food and they dont like the smell they will try to cover it.

She is just doing what comes normal - she does not want to share with her fellow housemates (animal or people). My male cat does it all the time and on occation his sister does it was well. Kinda funny to watch when it is a tasty food that they really like... he doesn't stop until he is tired.

It is possible that she does not like her food - maybe you should try switching.
If that does not work it might be because she has an instict to hide the food from others, so she can get it later.

It is normal for cats to do that. It is like a wild cat they wan't to hide it so it will be there for them later. Like a dog sometimes hides his bone in the back yard. It's just a cat thing. nothing to worry about.
