My cat has become very aggressive. He bites us for no reason and hisses at us if we move the wrong way. Sometimes he's fine and sometimes he's brutal. We are considering putting him to sleep because we are worried about his interaction with a new baby. He is fixed and he's 11 years old. What is wrong and what can we do?

There might be an underlying medical reason for his change in behaviour like diabetes for instance. I suggest a visit to the vets is in order to get him a medical check up. A new home, even if this was an interim home like a cat rescue centre, would be better than taking his life away by putting him to sleep. He is not that old even. But I understand your concerns.

It might be the stress of the new baby that's making him irritated. Cats have very fragile emotions and when things get out of order or aren't what he's used to, it can cause him stress. With a new baby he's dealing with a new creature, new smells, new sounds, and a whole new schedule pattern for mom and dad. If you're worried about his reactions with the baby, try keeping him in a separate location in the house, but be sure to give him as much attention as you can spare. Give him treats and toys so he knows you still love him. And don't act stressed around him because he feels it too. With time he will get used to the baby and start to mellow out. It can be a traumatic experience for him, so while you're playing with the baby, don't forget him and leave him in the cold.

Good luck and congratulations!

I kinow this sounds weird, but it's possible the cat is trying to protect the baby.

Sometimes cats who are going blind act like that, too.

Please see your vet. You may be able to protect both of them. Maybe have a special room or two where the cat can go instead of the whole house. Start by cutting him off from just one room. Then take away access to a second room...

Good luck.

Try spraying him with water when he bites you.
