Put some olive oil in his/her food my aunt does this all the time and it works wonders. Just a little bit to coat the food just maybe a teaspoon and mix it in. (it will also keep there fur shinny). Only once a week.

I'm not sure where the whole olive-oil recommendations have come from - a lot of people seem to have the conception that oil is good for the cat's hair coat or that it promotes digestive health. Oils that keep a cat's coat shiny are fish oils, not vegetable, peanut or olive oil. And while the oil may lubricate a hair ball out of the esophagus, it may also lubricate the intestines enough to give your cat diarrhea - not really a good trade off in my opinion!

If you're looking for natural remedies, there are a couple herbal supplements that are wonderful for keeping the gastrointestinal tract functioning well. Herbal marshmallow, slippery elm and licorice are all superb supplements that we've had success with. You can purchase them in liquid form and squirt them onto your cat's food each day, or they can come in a powder form which can be dosed orally once daily.

petroleum jelly, that is the main ingredient in all of the anti-hairball medications you can buy in the pet store. Put a little on your fingertips for your cat to lick off.
