It will be fine to feed the cats dog food until you can get to the store tomorrow. As others have said, cat's diets are dramatically different than dogs and thus they should not eat dog food regularly. However one day is not going to harm them.

Be aware though that the composition and even ingredients will be different in the dog food and may give the cats digestive upset.

Try to avoid giving them dairy as their digestive systems generally can not tolerate it well. Tuna can be fine but I would opt for un-seasoned cooked chicken as tuna is one of the most common food allergies in cats.

In addition avoid anything with garlic or onion. Ingesting these ingredients can cause cats to become anemic in a manner than is non-reversible. Please check the dog food to make sure that those ingredients are not included (dogs often love garlic and it is in many dog treats and holistic dog foods). A very small amount of garlic or onion will probably not result in anemia but if the for food contained these I would probably opt for chicken and cooked white rice for your kitties' dinners instead.

Try not to stress too much about this. Even the very best of us forget to get petfood sometimes and chances are your cats will be just fine and give you extra love when you bring home the Felidae tomorrow.

I think it is OK to give them dog food just for a day. I've done this before when I was in a pinch and the cats liked the dog food. I don't have canned tuna around so I had to use dog food. Nutritionally, it isn't as good for cats as cat food, but I think it is OK on a very short term basis.

Dog food will not hurt the cats for one day or so. The dog food does not contain taurine which is an essential amino acid that cats must have for eye and heart health. So if they are fed dog food on a regular basis you would be depriving them of this essential in their diet.

You are feeding a high quality food to both the cats and the dog.

You can feed them dog food, but the best thing to feed them either canned chicken or canned tuna. It helps to have a couple of extra on hand if you ever run out of food on sundays.

tunas better for your cat than dog food! But a cat won't eat something if it doesn't want to, not like a dog who'll eat anything! A cooked beef burger or sausage, chicken or fish will be ok just for today! also they'll probably think it's their birthday!

I would give the cats Tuna and the cook ground beef and rice for the dogs.

Tuna is NOT bad for cats. It's not balanced for everyday feeding but it will fill their tummies up. I've done it on several occasions over the past 20 years.

Cats can chew dog food, my louie ate our sandy's (mutt) kibble all the time I think it was a power thing.
Tuna as a treat is ok. Just highly fattening to a cat but if it's the option to kitty going hungry.
If were you I'd give it yougurt in the plainest flavor possiable, like plain or vanilla. Or cut up some raw chicken Maybe saute it a minute or 2. My moms cat loue eats it, he's very healthy & has thew softest fur. WEell he's crazty too but we think he came that way.

seriously? you just can't bring yourself to go to the convenience store and grab a box of purina cat and dog food? i know it won't be top of the line food or anything but it won't matter for just a couple of feedings until you can get their usual food tomorrow.

You can feed you cat tuna. I don't think is bad for cats. Also if she/he likes it you could try cooked beef.

And any meat for the dogs, maybe with rice or even vegetables.

First of all, next time make sure you have enough food to last through the weekend? They must be pretty hungry if they are eating the dog food. As a backup though, cook some chicken, pork or fish for them or give them tuna. They'll love any of those. They'll think they are getting a real treat!

Tuna is not "really bad" for cats. It is not nutritionally complete so they shouldn't eat it as a majority of their diet, - in the long term.

You're in a tight spot but for one day they can eat whatever you want to feed them, or nothing at all. It won't harm them. FYI I would avoid giving them milk, a large part of the cat population is lactose intolerant.

In the long term cats need to eat a cat food with the specific vitamins, minerals, and micronutrients. Dog food is not suitable for cats for the long term - it lacks taurine an amino acid they need for healthy hearts and vision.
