Try to keep it in for a few days so that it gets use to the new place and knows that this is where you are now. Other than that it is up to the cat whether it stays or goes. It's hard to say what will happen. Some animals have no problem with changing homes while others will always try to go back.

Move the cat last and make sure that many things in the new place has his/her scent on it and your scent too.
I suggest you leave the cat indoors for at least a week to get familiar with the new layout. Cats are smart and curious so watch out for windows that are open or other places the cat could get out.
I suggest when you first let the cat out that you go for a wander with the cat so the animal feels secure. Make sure you leave the door open so she/he knows where to run if something freaky happens.
I have moved many times with cats and some of them deal with it better than others. Just watch the cat, and if it is confident and curious about the outside s/he is probably ready to have a look after a week or so indoors.

We gave one of our kittens to a friend of ours who only lives a few blocks away. I told him to make sure the cat stayed inside for at least a week or the cat would probably make his way back to his original home. Yours is a little different situation in that your cat is familiar with you and your care-giving.
Get a litter box and and if there is something from his old "haunt" that your cat is very familiar with - a blanket that he often would sleep on - by all means make sure you take that.
It may sound silly, but get a cat leash also. Walk him outside. You will be helping him to become familiar with his new surroundings and your cat will feel better about. being outside. Like I said before, do this for a full week and everything should be fine.
You didn't mention your cat's gender and my response refers to your cat as though it is male. If your cat is female, extend my apologies to her.

Don't let the cat out - ever! Cats don't need to go outside. They may think they do and even tell you they do - but they DON'T! If you have a back yard try this kitty fencing: www.purrfectfence.com/. The cats can't get out and other critters can't get in. They get to spend SAFE time outside with no worries for you. Had it for almost 3 years - works great!
and worse is get hit by a car or attacked by a dog.

Keep him confined for 2 or 3 days so he can't run away while he's still disoriented from the move. Have familiar things close to him, especially his food, water, toys, litter box, etc. Give him lots of attention. He'll figure out that's his home.

Just try and keep it inside for about a week, that way it knows that you's are there and it can smell all your stuff, maybe when you let it out for the first time be with it and watch it, make sure it dosn't go too far away.

I heard if you put cooking oil or Vaseline on their paws before you let them out, they will get the new scent on their paws in order to become familiar with it and if they lick it off it will not hurt them. This will help them to recognize the new scent of their surrounding when being let out and should return to their new home.
