What I do is to put the salt in a plastic soda bottle and add water from the tank. Mix well. Leave the cap on, but unscrew it about 1/4 turn so air can get in. Use a pin to make a hole in the bottom of the bottle. Put the bottle where the water can trickle into the filter or tank. This adds the salt slowly, but i can do other things while it's being added.

You can leave the fish in the tank.

When doing water changes, I mix the salt directly into the new water before I put it into the tank.

To avoid shocking the fish, mix a little in water that is outside of the aquarium then add the salted water during a water change.

Salt disperses in a tank rather quickly and at normal levels up to about a tablespoon per 2 gallons can safely be added directly to the tank. when I forget to add it during a water change, I'll just drop it in the back of the filter and allow the filter to mix it in. The fish can very easily handle this minor change.
