I Have a bunch of Magnum 350's. I've been using a combination of pre-cut filter pads and aquarium poly-fill to strain the water before it gets to the carbon/micron cartridges. Is there anything better or cheaper out there?

I'm getting my pads for $1.25 on ebay, and 1lb bags of polyfiber for $3 at a local pet warehouse.

I was considering trying to put quilt batting in the mix. Has anybody used quilt batting or any other alternative materials with a canister filter?

I have used quilt batting for years with no bad results. Of course, it comes in both loss fill and in bats so it can serve several purposes.

The batting seems to be a little bit softer and denser than the pads made for the job so they don't hold shape quite as well and do get clogged a bit more quickly, but for the price savings it seems worthwhile to me.

A friend uses open cell foam (like would be used for a chair cushion) in his wet/dry with good results, but it clogs very, very quickly and is only good for a final polish step.

Hope this helps.

I surely have a Fluval canister on my planted aquarium and that i'm extremely satisfied with it. I even have power filters, and moist/dry filters on sumps on different tanks, and that i've got saved almost all kinds of aquarium there is. the better area of a canister clear out is that that is tucked out of sight, in a cabinet or in/under the stand, and is extremely quiet. that's needed make effective you do popular maintenace to stay away from clogging, purely rinse out all of the clear out media in previous fish water approximately as quickly as each ninety days in case you do no longer feed heavily. in case you prefer to confirm how great it incredibly is, do a seek of Takashi Amano tanks and spot how he makes use of glass lily tubes for water transport.. the entire element seems to vanish! we gained't try this with the different filtration. I surely have provided a hyperlink that has a astounding gallery. by utilising the way, stay away from undergravel filters. They do clog at last and you're able to do an entire tank tear all the way down to scrub it. i might in no way use those.

I don't have a canister filter but I had read about people using the quilt batting with no problems. Just make sure you don't get the fire retardant batting because it has stuff on it that can harm your fish.
