My child was born in the UK I am an Irish citizen and his mother is a US citizen. We would like to get him a US passort, surely I dont get the childs photograph put onto it! he is changing almost by the day and when we go back to the states in around 7 months he will be a lot different. Has anyone else had this problem?

I am a UK citizen married to a Croat and live in Croatia, I had to register my son within six weeks at the British embassy in Zagreb, they then gave me a birth certificate, then all I had to do was fill in the form and give them two passport photos and I got his passport within a week. It is ridiculous but yes, you will need the photos I think. Good luck getting a 7 month old to sit still for long enough!

If the father is an irish citizen and the mother is a US citizen and your child is under the age of 18 British Citizenship would not normally be given just because the child was born on british soil. The parents or parent depending on residents requirements and settlement status would need to check the Nationality and Citizenship office in Liverpool if they can apply for British Citizen status before a british passport will be issued. To apply for childs citizenship can take 3/5 months.

You need to apply for a Consular Report of the Birth of an American Citizen Abroad (FS-240) at the US embassy or consulate nearest where the child was born. When that is approved, you can also apply for a passport.

Yes, babies' passports have photos. While babies do change as they grow, they are still identifiable. And don't forget that the child must use the US passport to enter and leave the US.

Here is more information on registering the birth and applying for the passport:

check usgov.com for youth passport requirements or check at a local US embassy. I do remember that both parents have to sign it unless divorced. It cost about $112 for a child's passport. you might also be asked for official travel documents. You will need 2 passport pictures not taken by you. Good Luck.
