then just unplug it from the wall-socket...don't you have a ringer on/off button???

The only way to make it completely non-obvious is to have the incoming phone service redirected to a valid number, like a cel phone. Unplugging the phones will indeed prevent incoming calls from ringing in your house, but they'll also keep outgoing calls from even getting a dial tone (at which point most people will check to see why the phone's not working), and not all phones have a ringer on/off switch (and even if they do, they won't prevent the answering machine from picking up). Redirected calls will not affect outgoing service, though you'd probably need to have the phone service in your own name before they'll let you redirect the calls (so if you're a kid who's just trying to prevent a teacher from being able to contact your parents, you're out of luck).

either turn the ringer off (and make sure the answering machine isn't on!) or unplug it from the wall. You'll miss the call for sure.

just turn off the ringer, that way you can say you didn't hear it ring if confronted
