So far the answers say you are correct. i always believed it to be the other way around. here's what i found on wikipedia:
It is debatable which letter represents which act. Some interpret X as the crossed arms of a hug and O as the puckered lips of a kiss. However, the interpretation assumed in the following, in which X represents the four lips of a kiss and O the four arms of a hug, is more common.

I've always associated the X's with kisses and the O's with hugs - either way the recipient will know you mean hugs & kisses because they are usually used in combination.

Hugs are o's and kisses are x's. The way I remember is, the x is like when you purse your lips to kiss someone.
