I mean seriously, why not? i can see not legalizing crack and meth and other drugs like that. The government could make a KILLING of taxing marijuana. so many people smoke in this country, and all across the world. We are one of the few places i have ever been to where they can arrest you for smoking a joint. They dont even look at you funny when you smoke in canada or costa rica, or europe (some places). I just cant think of any real reason not to legalize and/or decriminalize it. please, i would love to see the reasons people have not to.

there is no reason, i am 18 and can openly debate any single person for the legalization or de-criminalization or marijuana, simply put the positives for smoking weed outweigh the negative by far

nick, how can you have seen people addicted to it if its not addicting?people may like it alot and dont want to stop simply because it is a fun thing to do, some people play poker or watch tv or play xbox all night, others smoke weed.....

also, i can give you THE reason for marijuana being the number one reason for treatment programs and such, it is sentenced by the court for marijuana possession offenders and if they dont go well they go to jail, so what do the stoners do?go to drug treatment programs, stay clean for however long they have to, and the day they get out go rip a bong

I think we should stop wasting money on it. The fact is, after all the work of finding them, arresting them and prosecuting them, only a few will really serve any significant sentence. The prisons are much too crowded to house every person who ever lit up. Also enforcement is so unequal it's a joke. I know a woman who called 911 because she was badly beaten with several broken bones. When the police arrived, they searched her home and arrested her for possession because she is kind of an older biker chick type. They routinely just ignore the young kids or give them warnings. It's not really a racial thing or anything like that, just if the police like you. The only problem I see with decriminalization is that there is no good test to see if a person is impaired. With alcohol, it's easy. If there is more than a tiny amount of alcohol in the blood or breath, a person is drunk. Marijuana takes much longer to break down and is stored in the body. A person can come up positive on a drug test weeks after the last use. It does not mean that he is impaired at the time of the test. Still, I think it is unfair to outlaw it for everyone because some people will drive. If a person will not be driving or operating machinery, for example a blind person, there seems to be no good reason to prohibit it. I do not use marijuana or other illegal drugs and only take legally prescribed medication when truly necessary. I do drink a small amount of alcohol a couple times a year. That doesn't mean I feel others should be prohibited from pursuing happiness in their own way, as long as no one else is getting hurt.

Unlike yourself there are those that advocate legalizing all drugs. What drug should be legalized next? Once you open Pandoras box, it will be impossible to close it.

The problem with legalizing marijuana comes down to collecting tax dollars. Why would I go buy, what I can grow, that won't cost me a thing? More people would just bypass the government and grow it themselves. Also just like in California now, you do not even have to be 18 to have a presrcription for marijuana, just enough money to see the right doctor.

To fully appreciate why some drugs, like weed, are illegal, one must look at the history of drugs. If you are still awake, as that sentence puts most people asleep, the regulation of drugs goes back to the turn of the 20th century. At that time, there was no FDA, and drug companies would give consumers drugs they discovered, not knowing what they were really good for. For example, in the early 1900's, Bayer ( yes, the aspirin people) sold heroin as a cough medicine. Sears offered 5 doses of heroin with a needle in a stylish carring case for $5.00. This was not stopped till the real properties of this drug were discovered. The government went through a moral phase after this, and began outlawing and regualting everything from drugs, to the mail to the movies. The movie Reffer Madness was made at this time to justify the outlawing of weed on a national level. This, and tougher laws, were passed to make this drug illegal. Some thoughts on weed are: 1. Weed leads to stronger drugs. Not all weed users go to heroin, but most if not all heroin addicts started with weed. But alcoholics usually start with beer, so why isn't beer outlawed? 2. from an economic standpoint, you can grow your own weed, and become a distributor with little or no investment. Even making your own alcohol is illegal. Can't tax it if you grow your own. 3. Prohibition of alcohol didn't work. Prohibition of weed does. Its not a good reason, but it is a reason.
The one thing to remember is this. Possession and use of weed is illegal, period. Using it will get you a criminal record. Whether you agree with it or not, I can not condone breaking the law. Work with the law. Lobby congressmen, join pro legalization groups. Work within the system to change the law. The hippies almost did it in the 1960s. Your generation needs to get involved. Pro leagalization groups need to do research into the effects of weed vs booze. they need to prepare reports and studies supporting its use. This will not be easy, ans most people smoke weed, and smoking is so taboo in this country now. But most importantly, work within the law, work the media and public announcements. Tout the medical uses and pain relieving effects, and one public opinion swings in favor of legalization, then a law can be passed, and I can finally open my bong parlor!

I agree with decriminalizing it. it would take dealers off the street because they would not be able to make money cuz it would be cheaper. but no polititian wants to be known as a (user). but some say if they let it legal it would destroy our youth, think of how many kids would be high all the time. the us would be a bunch of fat, lazy, and stoned kids. plus a big reason they dont is because there isnt a way of testing if a person is under the influence. i think if there a way to make a weed breathalizer then it would be more likely. anyone who has smoked knows they get more intoxicated from alcohol than pot. but you can test for that. one day maybe

Well since tobacco is legal, I guess addiction and health problems cannot be the reason. I really don't have a good answer, but it is true that the supporters of legalized marijuana do not have a powerful lobby like the tobbacco companies, oil companies, and gun makers do.

Because, contrary to popular belief and modern mythology, Marijuana is a dangerous, addictive drug. Other than it's use for medicinal purposes, modern medicine is proving that pot is harmful to the body physically, and, no matter what your stoner buddies say, it is addicting. I work in the mental health/ substance abuse field and have seen hundreds of people who have been clinically addicted to pot. Before you all start jumping up and down, do some research on addiction, real research, and you can't deny the facts.

tobacco can only be grown in certain areas so it is easy for the government to control and regulate it. pot, on the other hand, is a WEED and can be grown almost anywhere which would make it harder for the MAN to tax and have control of it. not a good reason, but apparently good enough to keep it illeagal.
