I have three cats and each one has their own box, and we change it everyday so it isn't a real problem he doesn't cover it up. It used to kill me that he goes through the motions of covering it up but doesn't actually touch the litter. Then again, he does drink with his paw, so maybe he isn't stupid. Is this normal for a cat?

Thanks.

To begin with every time a new kitten or cat enters or home I always take it's front paws and dig it's paws into the litter to let it know this is where it is suppose to go to the toilet and when I catch it doing it's business I take it's paws and show it how to cover it up. It has never failed. Also another problem could be the type of litter being used. Cats do not like rough textures on their soft paws. They prefer the sand like scoop able litter. Mine likes Multicat scoopable. It covers the smell nicely as well as cleans up easily. I hope some of my tricks will work for at least some of you. Good luck.

That does seem kinda wierd... My cat scratches the litter but doesnt usually cover anything, and he only pees on the right side of the litter box. I think they are very habitual creatures. My cats litter box also has a lid on it and he scratches the walls before he gets out, and goes back to the litter box and scratches around some more from outside of the box. Just like people, we all have different bathroom behavior, and I believe that cats are no different.

Yes, this is normal and he's not stupid. I can't tell you offhand why they do this, but some will. That's unusual that he drinks with his paw,,,HOW COOL!!! Some of mine will scratch around the water bowl and some put their paw in the water bowl before drinking. They do this because it is easier for them to see the water. They don't enjoy getting water in their nose...lol! I also must add that you have three smart cats,,,knowing which is "their" litter box! I have had some that will only use one box for stool and the other one for urine. Your's using their "own" litter box is VERY helpful for you. This way you know if one has abnormal stools or urine! So I say, let him scratch away, and give them all a pat on the head for using their "own" litter box!!!

I have two kittens about 6 months old.
One covers his poo very well before leaving the box.
The other one gets upset, scratching the wall and the plastic side of the box but doesn't touch the litter around his poo.

You know why he does that? Because he's afraid to get his pause DIRTY. Cause when he was smaller about 1 or two months old, he had a little diarreah and he dirtied his paws with his poo everytime to try covering it up. Every time I had to wash his paws with WATER.

Since then, he does this ridiculous thing on the wall, waiting for me to come and cover and pick up the yeuch.
I think it's the same thing for yours. In fact your kitty drinks with his paws and he would hate them to stink. He's maybe smarter than others!! He's an Aristocat!! =^-^=

My cat does that sometimes too. Im not sure if he is trying to get the litter off his paws or what. Maybe try putting a little mat in front of the litter box so he wont scratch elsewhere?

It sounds like your cat is fastidious about keeping clean paws and does not want to risk stepping on something sticky in the box. Scratching outside the box helps to shake out litter that the cat accidentally picks up between its pads.

Yes, this is normal for a cat. They paw and scrape all around where they just went. I'm sure in the wild eons ago that worked fine, covering it up with whatever is around. Now, though, they end up scraping the bare floor sometimes, not just in the cat box. My cat does the same exact thing.

My cat does the same thing. We aren't worried. Our cat will scratch around the box, the wall next to it, and even the doorframe in that room. But never the litter. Again I dont think its a big deal.

Ha ha! My silly yet adorable kitty scrapes the edge of the plastic litter box (after he's used it), never actually touching one bit of the litter - he takes ages doing that and then runs about 100mph to get as far away from the litter box as possible, which leads to him having a mad fit rushing round and round the place. What a performance!

This is normal. My cat will stay in the box scratching around for like 5 minutes everytime. Its annoying in the middle of the night.
