walkmans aren't that bad....
In answer to your question, it all depends on what you want.
If you want a ipod that play music, then i would personally recommend an ipod nano. it's great. All Ipods include itunes. This can allow to put on your cd music on your ipod. The ipod nano also comes in multple colors, so you can pick one that you like best.
If you want music videos and movies, then you definatly want an ipod video. I plays tons of music and video. It can also play tv shows(like the daily show, so on and so forth.)
To find out prices and more info, go to http://www.apple.com and click on the ipods section at the top.
Now, i know you didn't ask about this, but you'll need to know about it later. It regards on how to get music on your ipod. First, you could either get an itunes account, or you could be illegal and download limewire from http://www.limewire.com/english/content/beta.shtml
Then, you just simply save the limewire music to a file and import it from itunes into itunes(go to itunes, click file, import, then import the file.
Finally, update your ipod.
There you have it. hope you enjoy your new ipod

You don't need to ever download a single song for an iPod. iTunes is capable of ripping your entire CD collection into an iPod-friendly format.
As for a good starter format, I'd suggest either of the $250 models, depending on the size of your music collection and whether you'd ever want to be able to play video. If you've got anything close to 80 CDs, you'll definitely want to look at the 30GB iPod Video, as you'll run the risk of maxing out the capacity of anything smaller (and if you have over 250, go straight to the 80GB version). Likewise, if you'd ever want to be able to download video content to your iPod (including TV shows/movies purchased from the iTunes store or free video podcasts), you'd also need to buy the iPod Video. If you've got significantly less CDs and don't care about having portable video content, the 8GB iPod Nano might be a good place to start, since it does actually offer a more compact/lightweight design that'll be easier to deal with than the larger iPod Video.
Now if you do end up deciding to purchase from iTunes, they offer prepaid download cards in most stores, or you can just use a credit card to make the purchases without having to make a special trip to the store first. By now they might even accept PayPal, if you've got an account.

You need to download your songs off of iTunes by purchasing iTunes cards that give you credit. Search for your song or artist in the search to purchase what you want. You can also buy CDs and import them (or transfer the songs) to your iPod, and even your old ones you can import.

Just for music? iPod nano. Go to Circuit City, Best Buy, the Mall, the Apple Store, CompUSA, any computer store, and get an iPod nano (the biggest (or smallest) size).

You can just import your cd's into i tunes. It even automatically has the track names for most of them if you're connected to the internet. I don't know how many cd's you have, but my 512 mb player holds about 120 mp3's.
(don't listen to siine, Limewire is illegal and not very good.)
